EDS Commission Case Study: An Introduction to Peer Coaching

Background

The Headteacher at Chilvers Coton Community Infant School had attended a briefing on the Teacher Learning Academy where peer coaching had been discussed as an effective way of supporting improvements in classroom practice. As a result of this Elizabeth was commissioned to work with the staff to create a model of peer coaching that they could implement.

Aim

To gain an understanding of peer coaching and use the process to support and sustain structured partnerships to enable staff to relate to specialist inputs to day to day practice.

Structure of the Commission

  • Peer coaching was introduced in a national context to show how the inclusion of coaching in CPD has a greater impact in the classroom and to introduce the National Framework for Mentoring and Coaching.
  • The process of peer coaching was outlined.
  • The main part of the morning was to work through the process faciliated by Elizabeth, each member of staff was encouraged to identify an area for development relevant to them but which contributed to the school improvement plan.

Benefits to the School
  • Through discussion, using the expertise of the EDS Adviser in the chosen topic and the Headteacher's knowledge of the school needs, the commission was tailored specifically to Chilvers Coton and provided a cost effective way of training 21 staff.
  • All staff have a common understanding of the process and it's relevance to their part in developing the school.
  • The Senior Leadership team are supported in their drive to develop staff and raise standards.
