St. John's Museum Refurbishment Project |
December 2007- 'Case Layouts'
|
|
Whilst the electricians, decorators and carpenters where working in the building, lots was happening behind the scenes.
The Keeper of Social History and the Assistant Keeper of Human History, spent time selecting objects for the new displays. The objects needed to be checked to see if they need conservation work or special mounts made to support them once they are on display.
|
Time was then spent marking out the dimensions of the new display cases on the wall and floor. The objects could then be set out in the space to see how much space there was, if more objects were needed or too many chosen.
Perspex blocks and stands could be used to raise smaller objects and make sure the visitors could clearly see everything.

The two main themes for the new displays are 'Moving Toys' in the hall and 'The Victorian School' in the Schoolroom gallery. The Victorian School theme is divided into six sub-themes- 'Going to School', 'Learning', 'Fun Lessons', 'Treats and Punishments', Staying Away' and 'Afterwards'.
Each theme has its own case, text panel and objects relevant to that theme. Some objects where from other parts of the collection, such as the school pennies from the Numismatics collection.
|
The objects would all need labels telling visitors what they are and where used for. These labels would be put on a single A5 or A4 sheet that would look neat and sit next to smaller groups of objects.
Extra information about certain objects will be put on A4 laminated sheets in holders outside the display cases. Enlarged photographs of smaller objects, such as attendance medals, would also be available to visitors.
