Waste and Recycling
Eco Labelling

There are a variety of symbols that appear on packaging. They are not environmental claims but provide useful information to the consumer.

General

Mobius Loop
Mobius Loop - items with this symbol means that they can be recycled if there are facilities locally.

Mobius Percentage Loop
Mobius Loop with Percentage - this means that the item contains x% of recycled material.

Green Dot
Green Dot - this shows that a fee has been paid for the recovery of the packaging in some European countries.

Tidy Man
Tidy Man - Please dispose of this carefully and thoughtfully; do not litter.

Metal

There are two main types of metal packaging - aluminium and steel.

Recycling aluminium brings a potential energy saving of 95%, and is the most cost effective material to recycle. Nearly 60% of the aluminium used in the UK has been previously recycled.

Steel cans have a very thin layer of tin that protects the surface of the can, which is why steel cans are often called 'tins'. The average weight of this tin coating has decreased by 40% over the last 20 years.

To identify whether or not an item is a recyclable metal look for the symbols on the right.

Glass

Glass can be recycled infinitely without loss of quality.

Recycling just one bottle saves enough energy to power one of the following;
  • a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour
  • a computer for 25 minutes
  • a colour TV for 20 minutes
  • a washing machine for 10 minutes
All glass can be recycled but to be sure look for the symbol on the right.

Plastic

Recycling a single plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to light a 60w lightbulb for up to 6 hours.

There are 17 different types of plastic but around 95% of this packaging is made up of two plastic types - PET and HDPE.

To identify the different plastics each item will have a code as shown below.

Polyethylene Terephthalate
High Density Polyethylene
Poly Vinyl Chloride
Low Density Polyethylene
Polypropylene
Polystyrene
