The Warwickshire Against Prejudice and School Race Equality Awards took place on Wednesday, 22 March, at 4.00 pm at Manor Hall, Sandy Lane, Leaminton Spa.
The event was held to coincide with the European Week Against Racism. The theme for this year was 'For Diversity, Against Discrimination', a European Union compaign.
The event aims to:
- Recognise the work of Warwickshire schools in embedding Race Equality through the presentation of the School Race Equality Awards.
- Remind ourselves why we must continue to tackle racial harassment and proactively celebrate cultural diversity.
- Explore the themes of identity and global citizenship.
The event included:
- A classical Indian dance, Bharat Natyam, performed by pupils from the Avon Valley School.
- The Scamps, a choir from St Marie's Catholic Junior School, performed three songs which reflected themes from the event.
- A keynote speech by Dr Janet McKenley-Simpson, former HM Inspector for Schools, on Migration and Settlement
The School Race Equality Awards purpose is to:
- Recognise those schools who have really embedded race equality across all aspects of school life.
- All the submissions showed a commitment to the aims of race equality, and 8 schools won an award for their contribution.
- The judges panel found some exemplary practice where schools had gone beyond what was expected of them in statutory terms.
