Talisman Square Development Traffic Consultation - Option 3

Option 3 can be seen in the plan below. It is also available as a PDF here. Key elements of this option include the points set out below, these are in addition to the elements that are common to all schemes.

Talisman Square Consultation Option 3

  • A One-way restriction along Station Road from its junction with Bertie Road to the car park access located on the northern side of Station Road, near the junction with Waverley Road. Access into Station Road from Waverley Road would be permitted but only to allow vehicles access to the car parks.
  • Improved give-way junction, mini roundabout or traffic signals at the junction of Station Road/Waverley Road.
  • A one-way restriction along Station Road from the Abbey End car park to Warwick Road. This would enable significant widening of the pavement.
  • A right turn ban from Station Road into Warwick Road to encourage traffic heading north to use Abby End and reduce queuing along Station Road. Kerb buildouts on Warwick Road would physically prevent vehicles turning right from Station Road into Warwick Road.

  • Positive Impacts of Option 3
  • Visibility Problems at Bertie Road/Waverley Road junction are improved by a one -way system.
  • Traffic flow restriction caused by on street car parking along Station Road is resolved by a one-way system.
  • Restricted traffic flow on Southbank Road due to one-way gate at southern end
  • Wider pavement along part of Station Road, thereby improving the pedestrian environment.

  • Negative Impacts of Option 3
  • Introduction of a one way system may be confusing to drivers who are unfamiliar with the arrangements
  • Safety is compromised at the Station Road/Waverley Road junction. If a junction is introduced the safety issue is resolved but their is an increased cost.
  • Station Road westbound traffic may create an occasional blockage of Abbey End car park, forcing traffic to use eastern access into Waverley Road, which may cause further queuing there.

    Overall Results

Option 3 combines aspects of option 1 and option 2, maintaining an outbound one-way vehicular flow along Station Road onto Warwick Road, plus an additional route for vehicles departing from the development via Station Road/Waverley Road. There are a number of safety improvements associated with option 3, including improved visibility and enhanced pedestrian facilities. However, full pedestrianisation of Station Road between Abbey End car park and Warwick Road would not be achieved. This option also requires that the Station Road/Waverley junction is upgraded. The number of queuing vehicles leaving the town centre along Station Road via the Abbey End car park would increase from their existing levels. The resulting congestion within the town centre would be less than that caused by Option 1. Queuing on Waverley Road would be less than if option 2 is implemented.
