The Landfill Communities Fund (formerly known as The Landfill Tax Credit Scheme) is a source of funding that can be used for a wide range of environmental projects. This includes the natural, social and built environment - so the types of projects that are eligible include work to village halls, provision of sports and play equipment, improvements to nature reserves and repairs to war memorials.
- The fund derives its income through the tax on disposal of waste in landfill sites. This tax is levied on every tonne of waste - some of which can then be reclaimed from Revenue and Customs provided it is given to an eligible project.
- The LCFis a generic name for the funding – the grants themselves are administered by a number of organisations who are linked to waste management companies.
- Certain criteria have to be met under the scheme, e.g. category d, da and e projects have to be within 10 miles of a licenced landfill site. Within this, the organisations who administer the grants also have their own criteria, e.g. they will only consider projects if they are within 10 miles of one of the sites where their credits were generated.
- The criteria for projects are :
a) reclamation or restoration of derelict land
b) dealing with contaminated land
d) the provision, maintenance or improvement of a public park or public amenity (must be open to the public)
da) the conservation or promotion of biological diversity through:
i) the provision, conservation, restoration or enhancement of a natural habitat.
ii) the maintenance or recovery of a species in its natural habitat
e) the maintenance, repair or restoration of a building or other structure which is a place of religious worship or of historic or architectural interest (must be open to the public).
*Category C projects were removed from the LCF in 2003.
