Dear Mrs. Stebbing,
Many thanks for your kind invitation to luncheon on Friday - I telegraphed you today that I am unfortunately engaged here as I thought you might wish to fill my place. I don't know if you have heard that Mr. Eve has been laid up for the last 10 days with the effects of a seizure which he had when taking 'laughing gas' at the Dentist's. He is making a good recovery - but Mrs. Eve has of course been anxious and I have been in Town almost all the time since - with the exception of a couple of days at Tunbridge Wells. Hoping to have the pleasure of seeing you the next time I am down.
Yours very sincerely,
J.W.Cross.
