Does it look like you are in?
The vast majority of burglaries occur from the rear of a property, after a knock on the front door to confirm no one is in. Ensuring your house looks lived in when you are out (especially when it's dark) is very important. Leave a number of lights on, not just a small lamp on a timer.
Have you fitted strong locks to your doors and windows? Are there places where burglars could break in unseen?
Security of your side / back gate is extremely important. You should ensure that gates are stoutly locked and (if possible) close to the front elevation of your property. Taking away gates at the bottom of narrow alleys / paths with little natural surveillance from the road makes your property less of an 'easy win' for the burglar. If you have an exposed side window (along a side road, or adjacent to an alleyway), make sure it is always locked securely.
Would they have to make a lot of noise?
Most burglaries occur at properties without a burglar alarm. An alarm is a huge deterrent, as it will alert others to a burglars presence - which is the last thing that they want. Don't forget if you have a burglar alarm - it won't work unless you activate it before you leave the house!
Is there an easy opportunity for a burglar to steal something?
Many burglaries are committed by opportunist thieves. In two out of ten burglaries, no force is applied - burglars will get in through an open door or window. It only takes a matter of seconds for an opportunist to sneak-in, so if you are not using a particular room or are in the garden - make sure you close and lock all unattended windows and doors.
Is your property identifiable?
Should a burglary occur - have you marked your property with a UV pen, or better still - with SmartWater? Identifiable property is less vulnerable as it is much harder to sell on, or dispose of.
