Countryside Access Liaison Group

The Countryside Access Liaison Group (CALG) - previously known as the County Rights of Way Forum - is a non-statutory Forum which covers Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull and looks at countryside access issues.

Members are drawn from the district and borough councils of Warwickshire, Solihull MBC, Coventry City, plus a representative from the Association of Parish Councils. A representative from the Countryside Agency, who grant aid much of the access work in the area, also attends.

The Countryside Access Liaison Group
  • Landowners interests are represented by the Country Landowners Association (CLA), the National Farmers Union (NFU) and an individual farming representative.
  • Walkers are represented by Ramblers Association (RA) and Open Spaces Society (OSS).
  • Horse riders through the British Horse Society (BHS).
  • Cyclists through the Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) and British Mountain Bike Federation (BMF).
  • Off road motorcycling through the Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF).
  • Off road driving through the Land Access Recreation Association (LARA).
  • Community groups, local associations and volunteers include the Heart of England Way Association and Kenilworth Footpath Preservation Group.
  • Others include the Countryside Agency, Cotswold Warden Service and the Police Wildlife Liaison Officer.
The aims of the Group are:
  • To increase the members understanding of rights of way issues.
  • To promote an awareness of the members requirements.
  • To open up opportunities for discussion and the resolution of problems.
  • To contribute to the monitoring and review of the Council’s policies and procedures.
Over the life of the Group the first aim has broadened to become ‘countryside access’ issues, ie including Countryside Stewardship and other permissive access schemes, Right to Roam, unsurfaced roads, and more.

The Group has been meeting since 1991. It was first known as the County Rights of Way Forum, but its name was changed in 2004 to the Countryside Access Liaison Group, partly as a result of the setting up of a Local Access Forum, resulting from the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.
