Kenilworth Footpath Preservation GroupIn July 1974 an open meeting was held at a school to express concern at the poor state of the public footpaths and bridleways around Kenilworth. Many were obstructed and almost all were difficult to find and walk easily. Action was clearly necessary and it was decided to form a group to remedy the situation.
The Kenilworth Footpath Preservation Group started by tracing the route of all local paths and listing obstructions. The next stage was to contact farmers and landowners to begin the process of building and repairing stiles, putting in plank bridges and clearing and waymarking with blue and yellow arrows.
Before metal kissing gateStanley Alexander, speaking on behalf of the numerous members of the group, said:
"Warwickshire County Council recognised and approved these efforts initially. The group now work in close co-operation with the Countryside Recreation Team, who supply material and tools and logistics to the group and also keep us informed of current government legislation, and with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. After metal kissing gate installed

As a pioneering group we have succeeded in maintaining 80 miles of footpaths in our footpath guide 'Kenilworth Footpaths' which is regularly revised and updated, creating a major amenity for the Kenilworth and Warwickshire community"
The group are currently active in promoting access to the footpaths network for the disabled and the less mobile by installing metal and wooden kissing gates to replace stiles. The tasks are suitable for all levels of ability and fitness so all can contribute.
