Photo Competition 2008 - Winner and runners up within the Landscapes and countryside category

Entries for the Landscapes and countryside category include images of scenic views of the county such as panoramic shots, or specific parts of the countryside including fields, hills, rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, trails and walkways or images of local wildlife and plants.

The winner
Nick Cockman, 24 from Warwick, submitted the serene winning image below titled Stratford Swan. Nick says "it was taken on a Nikon D50 camera and Sigma 18-200 Lens, no filters used (although I do normally). The picture was taken in the morning shortly after sunrise on a very cold morning. It was very foggy which gives the colours & effect on the sun bursting through the trees".

Nick Cockman, Winner of the Landscapes and countryside category in the 2008 Warwickshire Photo Competition

1st Place
Nick Cockman's Stratford Swan is an excellent photo and was judged to be the best image submitted due to a number of factors that the judges were looking for. The photo has excellent mood and tone - conveying a completely tranquil scene. The graceful swan is also reflected perfectly on the water. Technically good, the image contains good light exposure and is well composed.

Nick chose as his prize professional monitor calibration software to the value of £85, from the category sponsor Cheryl Doshi Photography Ltd of Leamington Spa .

Farmhouse in November, Grand Union Canal

2nd Place
Dave Meredith's Farmhouse in November, was among several excellent images submitted by him to the competition. An established photographer, Dave even has his own website at www.theirisgallery.org. This particular image was especially liked by the judges due to it's fantastic colours, and the skill that Dave has shown in using image manipulation software to enhance an already well composed photograph.

Hartshill Hays country park hazy woods

3rd Place
Jim Lawrie from Nuneaton took this image of a Hazy woods at Hartshill Hayes Country Park. Our overall winner from the 2006 competition, Jim caught this image of a hazy shaft of light breaking through the tree canopy onto the floor below. An inviting image of a hazy summers day walk through the woods and wild flowers seen at many of Warwickshire's Country Parks.

Rugby Canal person in Tunnel

Commended
Joanne Betts took this interesting image titled Rugby Tunnel Birds eye view. Full of shadows and curves, plus an unusually posed figure positioned in exactly the right spot, the photo is very different from typical photos but all the better and more interesting for it. Works well in black and white. Technically good in terms of exposure, and cropped well.

Light and Dark at Warwick Castle

Commended
Keith Hayler, took this image called Light and Dark, Warwick Castle Tunnel. Judges commented on how well spotted this particular image was and commented on the interesting shadows cast against the wall sandstone. Different from typical photos.

Hampton Lucy field

Commended
All of the entries by Nick Cockman contained good use of light, including this image titled Evening at the Cornfields. Full of colour and mood, it sets the perfect scene of an evening summer walk through countryside in Warwickshire.

Whitethroat

Commended
Tony Cox took this excellent image of a Whitethroat at Brandon Marshes Nature Reserve. Perfectly focussed and framed well, judges commented on the skill that Tony has as a wildlife photographer.
