Introduction - What is FireBreak
|
| Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service's Firebreak is a programme designed to offer Key Stage 4 pupils an opportunity to take part in a learning experience outside the school environment. |
Pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of pride and diligence in their approach to work and to acquire greater self-esteem. This is facilitated through a course that combines practical scenario based training with theory/discussion workshops. The course also aims to provide vital life skills e.g. communications, teamwork and self confidence.

During a twelve-day course spread over a twelve-week period, students take part in activities aimed at improving self-esteem, self-discipline and responsibility. This is achieved by employing fundamental Fire Service principles of leadership, teamwork and discipline.
The Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is committed to the continuous development of working with young people, it ensures that the Firebreak Scheme will make a valued contribution to this. |

History
|
The Firebreak scheme has developed since running two pilot courses in the south of the county, early in the year 2000. The scheme has also proved to be successful in other counties, Leicestershire has been running the scheme since 1998 and they have received positive feedback from the Education Authority.
New funding has allowed Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service to develop its Firebreak Scheme into a permanent fixture within the Youth Development Department.
|
| Teachers involved with the first two trial courses within Warwickshire have stated, “There was a definite improvement in student behaviour, to all those students completing the course”. One student signing on to complete a further term at school and two joining the armed services after leaving school. | | |
