Tunnel Bridge Reconstruction

In April 2000 The Highways Agency commissioned Design Services to carry out the design and project management for a £1.5m replacement for the existing 1960's structure.

The original 'Tunnel' was constructed in 1776 and was replaced by a brick arch structure around 1860. This bridge lasted for around 100 years before being replaced by the existing 2 span concrete structure.

The new structure is designed as a single span bridge to be supported on steel beams with a concrete deck.

Tunnel bridge - traffic on Bailey Bridge
The A423 Tunnel Bridge over the Oxford Canal at Fenny Compton, opened to two way traffic on 31st May, two weeks ahead of schedule.

Part of the contract, which started in October 2001, involved the erection of a Bailey Bridge which spanned both the canal and nearby railway line. This was commissioned immediately after the Christmas holiday and by diverting the traffic on to this, the demolition of the previous bridge was able to commence.

A formal ceremony took place in September 2002 when a plaque was unveiled stating that the bridge was opened during the Queen's Golden Jubilee .

John Deegan, Director of Environment and Economy said,

"We are delighted that such good progress has been made. This has resulted in the disruption to road users being kept to minimum. It is apparent that much of the success of this contract is attributable to it being run on a partnering basis between the County Council, who project managed it, Galliford Midlands, the main contractors, and their sub-contractors. I would like to congratulate all those involved"
