HAZCHEM and COSHH
Hazardous Chemicals and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. Within Warwickshire County Council COSHH is dealt with from Fire Service Headquarters, by the County COSHH Officer. The COSHH Officer is responsible for looking at and assessing all hazardous substances used by the Council.
The COSHH Officer offers the following advice to protect yourself when using hazardous substances:
If in doubt about a product DO NOT USE, substitute with a safer product
Use the proper procedures and protective clothing and equipment
Follow warnings and instructions
Read the labels on containers
Learn emergency procedures
Practice sensible safe work habits
Remember a hazardous substance is any liquid, dust, fume, vapour, gas or micro-organism that may be harmful to your health.
Common substances like chemicals, cleaning solvents and pesticides can be hazardous
All substances that are harmful display 1 of 4 warning symbols, these symbols highlight the danger associated with the product.
The black cross pictured on an orange background indicates that a substance is harmful. That means the product is harmful if inhaled or swallowed. It will cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory system.
A skull and crossbones on an orange background denotes products that are toxic. These product are more dangerous than the 'harmful' substances. As they are toxic they should not be inhaled, swallowed or allowed to come into contact with skin or eyes.
The test tube and hand combination denote a product that is corrosive. These products are not only corrosive to humans but also to animals and other materials. If these substances come into contact with skin or eyes or if they are inhaled they will cause burns.
A picture of a flame on an orange background shows that the product in question is flammable. The vapours of such substances may also be flammable and will ignite in the presence of a naked flame.
