Description
In his reply to [H C] Bastian, G H Lewes replies encouragingly about a paper the latter has sought his opinion on. Lewes offers some advice about publication, and at the end of the letter offers to send it to Trollope, if Bastian is agreed. Written from The Priory, Regent's Park. Dated Saturday. The Nuneaton Library Index proposes a date of November 1868. Signed G H Lewes.

My dear Bastian
Your paper seems to me not only valuable in itself but one eminently adapted to the "Fortnightly" were it not that both editor and readers might be repelled by the too technical nature of the introduction; my advice is either that you rewrite the first eight pages with a view to an ignorant audience - or perhaps safer still omit this introduction and begin at once with the question of _ _ _ _ [indecipherable]. I send you back the paper for your decision on this point, and will gladly forward it when revised to Ainsley[?].
Shall I write to him at once saying there is such a paper to be had if he has room for it? In case he says 'yes' you could send it to him direct when finished. In case he says 'no' you can try elsewhere. I would send it to Trollope for you if you liked.
Ever yours
G. H. Lewes
