Councillors And Committees
How the County Council makes decisions
Meetings of the County Council
The full County Council, comprising all 62 councillors is responsible for agreeing the annual budget and for approving the Council's policy framework. The budget and the plans and strategies that together form the policy framework are proposed by the Cabinet.

Meetings of the County Council are held in public, at least six times a year, with an annual budget meeting in February.

Cabinet
The main decisions on the running of the Council are taken by the Cabinet, a body which consists of the Council's leader and deputy leader and eight other councillors known as portfolio holders, each of whom has a special responsibility for a particular area of the Council's work.

The Cabinet meets in public every three weeks.
Overview and Scrutiny Committees
These committees comprise councillors from all political groups and are chaired by Labour or Liberal Democrat councillors. They do not take decisions, but play an important role in developing policy, scrutinising the work of the Cabinet, investigating issues of concern and by monitoring the council's performance.

Area Committees
The County Council has five Area Committees that meet to take decisions on local issues. The Area Committees also provide an opportunity for local people to have a say on issues affecting them. For details use the link below:
