Welcome to Warwickshire County Council

Countryside Recreation

Who to contact with a footpath problem?

If the problem is
rubbish or fly tipping on a footpath, this is dealt with by your local district or borough council.

Is the footpath a paved or tarmac path beside the road? This is a footway or pavement and is dealt with by County Highways

Is the
footpath across or alongside a field? This is dealt with by the Countryside Access Team.

Is the problem with the
surface of a tarmac alleyway? This is dealt with by County Highways even if it is a public right of way. Countryside Access Team would deal with problems such as upgrowth or overgrowth if the alleyway is a right of way.

Footpath through wheat field

Is the problem the
obstruction of an alleyway with a gate or similar to prevent pedestrian access? This needs to be referred to Countryside Access Team in order to either get the obstruction moved or establish that the route is not a public right of way. Obstruction of vehicular access is usually a matter of private rights or easement and as such is not a matter for the council.

Contact Details

In all cases we must have a name and contact number/e-mail to enable feedback or clarification of the place or problem. We do not disclose information on complainants to landowners etc. If we are unable to find the problem or it is not a public right of way, we want to be able to get back to you.

Definitive Map Locations

There are copies of the Definitive Map in various places in the county, including some libraries, for members of the public to consult. This shows the route of public rights of way but, as it is a paper version, there may have been legal changes since it was published. Contact Countryside Access Team with any queries.
