Tithe Apportionments Database
How to search

The database is searchable in two different ways, firstly by “views” or "indexes" and secondly by a free text search box. The views enable you to look for information in alphabetical order by parish, owner or occupier. Within the parish view, records are displayed in plot number order, not in the way that they were originally entered into the schedule.

To view the information, click on the right-pointing blue arrows for further information or the underlined names to see the full entry.

There is also a free text search, which is useful if you want to find a specific individual piece of land, or if you want to view entries by the state of cultivation or see the amount of titheable land a specific individual owned.

Each entry has a notes field, where additional information may be entered. There is a ‘remarks’ column in the tithe apportionments, and where comments have been made these have been entered into the notes field. Occasionally the notes field may indicate a duplicate entry, where more than one owner or occupier has been recorded. To find out the names of the additional landowners or occupants, make a note of the plot number and parish and view all entries for the parish by selecting the ‘by parish’ view. The entries will be listed in plot number order, and duplicate entries will have the same plot number.

Tips on searching
Using a wildcard allows you to find words containing part of your search string, e.g Hil* will find all those names containing Hil: Hill, Hillman, Hilton etc.

Use a ? to indicate that just one character is missing or the * to indicate multiple missing characters.

Single character wildcard search
Examples
mac? Finds all four letter surnames which match the pattern (such as Mack or Mace)
b???k Finds all five letter surnames which start with B and end with k (such as Brook, Black or Blick)

Multiple character wildcard search
Examples
s*h Finds all surnames which start with S and end in h (such as Smith, Smyth or Squelch)
jac* Finds all surnames which start with Jac (such as Jacob, Jacobs or Jacox)
*ed Finds all surnames which end in ed (such as Need, Reed or Pendred)
*re* Finds all surnames which have ‘re’ anywhere in the surname (such as Breedon, Greenwood or Moore)
