Background Plans to improve Waterside and Southern Lane have been under consideration for many years. With the redevelopment of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Bancroft Gardens a high quality scheme had to be developed to ensure that the area looked finished and complete. The Transport Strategy and the Waterfront Masterplan identified that provision for the pedestrian should be enhanced. From these documents the Waterside and Southern Lane scheme was developed. The improvement scheme will start on the 15 March 2010 and it is expected to take approximately 31 weeks to complete. What does this involve? The road along Waterside will allow one-way traffic southwards from Waterside towards Southern Lane as well as having a contra-flow cycle lane, allowing bicycles to travel along the road in both directions. The footway will be laid with york stone paving and widened considerably to create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians. The road will be raised to footway level and laid with small granite paving to match routes in the Bancroft Gardens, at the junction of Waterside and Sheep Street and outside the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (Theatre Square). These raised areas will help pedestrians to cross the roads with ease. Between these two raised areas and also at the bottom of Chapel Street, 17 new car parking spaces will be provided solely for disabled motorists. Beyond Theatre Square on Southern Lane, the road will be re-surfaced and the footway will be laid in blue brick, as at present, although the footway will be widened where space allows. An unloading bay will be provided close to the southern end of the Theatre and from this point to the end of Southern Lane, the existing parking provision will not be changed. Any heritage lighting columns removed as part of the works will be relocated in the Theatre Gardens as part of a scheme to upgrade the footpath between the theatre and Holy Trinity Church, and also in Old Town Mews.
Traffic regulation orders and parking The Traffic Regulation Orders will come into effect at the start of the works, meaning that traffic will be one way and public parking along Waterside will not be allowed. Once the works are completed only loading and unloading will be allowed in two marked bays adjacent to the shops, along with seven bays for disabled parking which will be located between Sheep Street and the Theatre. Warwickshire County Council and Morrison Contractors will endeavour to restrict the disruption to a minimum throughout the works.
