How does the Sites and Monuments Record work?

The Record currently incorporates c.9000 sites and finds. Each site or find is given its own record number and all the information relating to the site is linked to this number. Sites are outlined on a database where details relating to the date and type of site and any statutory or non-statutory status is recorded. To compliment the database each site or find is illustrated on a map. As a result, the location and distribution of sites and monuments in Warwickshire are visible.

The Record is continually expanding. Sites can range from the very grand, such as Warwick Castle to the less apparent, but no less important such as Roman pottery. The SMR covers all prehistoric and historic periods and all possible types of sites.

What information can I obtain?

A major function of the SMR is to provide information to the public, we use the Record to answer a variety of queries. By collecting data from numerous sources, we aim to provide information as comprehensive as possible on archaeological sites in Warwickshire.
The major sources we use are:

· Aerial Photographs (examples 1 and 2)
The Warwickshire Museum Air Photograph Collection is an integral part of the SMR and with over 12,000 photographs, provides an invaluable source of information.

· Historic Maps (example)
We hold c.350 historic and modern maps, including First and Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps.

· Published material
A library of books is available for consultation on archaeological sites and techniques of excavation.

· Unpublished material
Including the writings of local antiquarians and local research groups and societies.

· Journals
A variety of national and local journals, including "Britannia", "Birmingham and Warwickshire Archaeological Society" and "Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society".

· up to 500 Fieldwork Reports
Including geophysics, trial trenching, excavation. Mostly as a result of development work, we have a large number of reports for all Warwickshire parishes.

· Statutory Designations
Information is held by the SMR on Scheduled Ancient Monuments and some Listed Buildings.
