Towns of Warwickshire - Offchurch

Offchurch is a small and pretty village three miles east of Leamington Spa.

Places of interest

Offa, King of the Mercians, had a church here (hence the name Offchurch, which comes from "Offa's Church"). It is reputed that the remains of a stone coffin found under the porch of the current St Gregory's Church are the remains of King Offa's coffin.

At one time the church and village belonged to Leofric Earl of Mercia whose wife was Lady Godiva. The current church is Norman but has been extended and altered. There has been a place of worship on the site since the 5th century.

The river Leam flows to the north and west of the village and the Grand Union canal is close by. Warwickshire County Council maintains a length of former railway as an area of nature conservation which also provides a pleasant walk.
