Regional Innovation for a Competitive Europe (RICE)

WCC is leading a £750K project on innovation within the land-based sector and related supply chains in the areas of bio-fuels, novel materials and health & well-being. Our aim is to identify and link farmers/ growers with the most promising new market opportunities in those three areas and to identify any barriers preventing their exploitation. Our partners are the University of Warwick, an agricultural support organisation in Västra Götaland (western Sweden) and two research institutes in Saxony in eastern Germany- one on textiles and the other on bio-ceramics. RASE (Royal Agricultural Society of England) are also closely involved in the West Midlands steering group. The project runs to November 2007 but aims to disseminate interim results at the Royal Show at Stoneleigh Park in July 2008.

RICE is part of a wider inter-regional project led by the Tuscany Region and in the West Midlands by UK Trade and Investment.

Clean Region

INTERREG funding was used by Warwickshire County Council's County Highways Team - in partnership with the University of Warwick and partners in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Latvia, the Netherlands and Sweden - to research the use of pesticides for weed control on hard surfaces. The project focused on the technical and operational aspects of wedd control and looked at new equipment and processes for delivering less environmentally damaging solutions on roads and footways.
