 | Alcester is a thriving rural market town and first dates back to Roman times where it lay at the crossing of Ryknild Street and the Salt Road and was known as Aluana. Today, its medieval street pattern survives remarkably intact along with many ancient buildings.
There are many archaeological sites of interest in the town and around the surrounding area. The recently opened Roman Alcester Museum and visitor centre brings the world of Roman Alcester alive and enables visitors to delve into the fascinating time of the Romans.
The town also features many lively events, fairs and festivals held throughout the year that are organised by the 'Court Leet'. These include the Town Criers Competition in April, the Annual Mop in October, the Folk and Arts Festival, and annual Rememberance Parade.
Alcester has many fine, restored historic buildings and picturesque streets, with the high street reminiscent of a bygone era. Ancient properties include the Church of St Nicholas with its 14th century tower and the early 17th century Town Hall.
All of these buildings in the town centre can be explored with the help of a Heritage Trail leaflet available from the library and church.
Other magnificent buildings of note are the nearby stately homes of Coughton Court, Kinwarton Dovecote and Ragley Hall, all just outside of Alcester.
While the nearby villages of Temple Grafton and the more northerly Temple Balsall are steeped with history and closely linked with the historic Knights Templar.
Other villages and nearby hamlets include Great Alne, Coughton and Little Britain.
