Race Equality - George Elliot School's
Freedom Day
200 Year 8 students from George Elliot School in Nuneaton, were treated to a special assembly about the themes of Africa and Freedom.
Mr Collins started the assembly by giving a brief introduction to the history of Africa including the period of slavery. He highlighted many contributions Africa has made to the world in terms of art, culture and development.
Rohini Corfield then talked about the visit of 15 Warwickshire Teachers to South Africa and the Give a Book - Help Build a Nation project.
She emphasized that sending the books was an example of active citizenship and asked students to think of how else they could help others in different parts of the world. She finished by talking about the Commission for Africa, a new panel set up by the Prime Minister and Bob Geldof to challenge the world to think about ways of tackling African poverty and celebrating Africa's achievements.www.dfid.gov.uk
