Schools' Energy Check
Calling all Warwickshire schools do you wont to reduce your energy bills? Why not check how much energy you are wasting by carrying out the schools' energy checks.
PART 1
The first part of your
mission is to carry out an undercover “
Energy check
”
of your school
before
‘Switch It Off’ week, to find out where lights, computers and other energy-gobbling items have been left on. Download the
top secret energy check card
to help you make a list and take a meter reading.
Your results will be all the more dramatic if you keep your mission confidential (not telling anyone about it until it is done!). Only discuss the special mission with your Eco Action Team Members/School Councils/Committees, Caretaker and Headteacher and ask for their help in keeping the mission confidential until you are ready to reveal your findings.
PART 2
The next part of your mission is to tell your friends, teachers and even parents about your findings at the next assembly and to tell them all about ‘Switch It Off’
Week. You could also put up posters, create displays and produce art work on the theme of Switch It Off week. You can download
campaign resources
such as posters and leaflets to help you with this.
PART 3
During Switch It Off week carry out another Energy Check and fill in the
second energy check card
. This will help us to see whether switching things off helps make a difference in saving energy use in your school. Use the second Switch It Off postcard to send your new findings to the Eco Schools Officer at the address given on the cards.
PART 4
The final job is to discuss whether there was any difference and share this with the whole school. What changes could be made to help you to continue to save energy? You could use this campaign as part of a longer-term project to record energy consumption at your school. If you're not already doing so, you could take electricity readings every week or month to build up a useful graph of energy consumption over time. This could help you target energy usage and help reduce electricity bills. Any readings you take or findings you discover can be stored in your Eco School folder, and will help in your work towards the
Green Flag Award
.
