Switch It Off week 2009

The Switch It Off campaign, which took place across Warwickshire, Coventry and Worcestershire, aims to encourage public bodies, businesses, communities, schools and residents to Switch Off non-essential appliances which are left on when they're not needed.

Below are the activities which took place for Switch It Off in 2009.

General

Blue Arrow The Big Switch Off 2009 took place on Friday November the 13th from 4:30pm - 6:30pm. E.on Central Networks once again monitored electricity usage at the Bulk Supply Points during the Big Switch Off and reported that during the two hours there was 26.9 megawatt drop in peak demand when compared to the same time the previous week. This is equivalent to 154, 598 householders in Coventry, Warwickshire and Worcestershire turning off their televisions for the full two hours.

Blue Arrow Giveaways - Useful information on saving energy and an energy efficient light bulb was given away across Warwickshire. Over the course of the week over 1000 individual were spoken to in Atherstone, Nuneaton, Stratford and Rugby.

Blue Arrow Dine By Candlelight - On Thursday the 12th November five restaurants in and around Warwick urged people to switch off at home and go out and enjoy a candle lit meal. Over 30 people took up the offer with positive feedback being received.


Schools

Blue Arrow On November the 18th, a number of Warwickshire secondary school, year eight pupils took part in Universally Challenged, an environmental quiz for schools. Competition was closes with Kenilworth School winning the Warwickshire heats and going on to face the winning Coventry school in the new year.

Blue Arrow Energy Detectives - Bishops Itchington Primary School took part in the Switch It Off campaign 2009 by becoming energy detectives. The children took meter readings the week before Switch It Off in order so they could compare their use with Switch It Off week. They then tried really hard to remember to switch lights and appliances off when they weren't needed e.g. playtimes. At playtimes a group of Energy Detectives went round the school recording who had left appliances on . Businesses/Organisations

Blue Arrow Businesses across Warwickshire were encouraged to add SIO information or links to company websites and include SIO messages in team meetings or other briefings.

Blue Arrow Heart of England Coop supported by displaying posters and providing customers with information on their energy efficient appliances.

Blue Arrow Warwickshire Police supported the campaign by encouraging staff to switch off non-essential electrical appliances when not in use.

Blue Arrow North Warwickshire College - The College took part in SIO week with a number of diverse initiatives aimed to involve both staff and learners in reducing energy wastage. Some of the activities included
  • Student led energy audits - Students were given the opportunity to investigate around the college to learn which areas are wasting the most energy and study actions to reduce consumption.
  • Environmental Movie Screening
  • Energy Talks - Energy and Water Conservation: a mission possible, a conference on how to reduce consumption in our day to day lives
  • Lets twitter on about energy - A live chat available on the college IT system to allow staff and learners to share ideas and daily actions to save energy and learn from others experiences
  • The College Big Switch Off - One hour switch off of unnecessary appliances on Friday 13th November 12:30 - 13:30pm
Blue Arrow Chamber of Commerce contacted its members and encouraging them to Switch Off

Blue Arrow The Coventry Telegraph were media partners in the Switch It Off campaign 2009 reporting on how to save energy in the home and encouraging people to Switch Off.
