In 2003, the Chinese New Year falls on February 1 and signifies a Chinese Black Sheep (Black Goat, Black Ram) Year.We at the County Council are doing our own little bit to ensure Chinese New Year celebrations closer to home go out with a bang when Rugby Chinese Society sees in 2003 with style.
Warwickshire's Race Equality Budget within the Chief Executive's department has given the local society £2,000 towards projects relating to the New Year, including fan and lion dancing, Chinese opera and painting and Tai Chi displays,
in what promises to be an eye-catching festival.
Rugby Chinese Society chairman Kin Wan, said he hoped the town's fifth festival would be the 'biggest yet', welcoming guests from the Mayor of Rugby, Councillor Bill Shields, to acrobats making a special visit from China and Hong Kong.

Mr Wan said: "The aims of our society are to further multi-cultural understanding and forge links within the Chinese community. Membership is open to all nationalities –four English families have already joined and the children really enjoy lion dancing."
The society, which started life in Rugby United Reform Church, will be holding this year's festival in larger premises at the Indian Association Centre in Edward Street to accommodate the extra spectators anticipated.
Rugby Chinese Society will be celebrating New Year on Monday 10 February from 5-9.30pm. Advance tickets are recommended on 07980 381187.
