Organic food sellers are being praised after a regional survey of organic products, conducted by Warwickshire County Council Trading Standards Service and its CEnTSA partners, revealed 100% authenticity of produce.
The sale of organic foods is now big business and is estimated to be worth £2 billion annually. Often a higher charge is made for organic foods and so to ensure that consumers are getting a fair deal Trading Standards and Environmental Health officers in the CEnTSA region conducted a survey of products being sold as organic.
Over 30 premises were visited and a range of foods examined, in particular those being sold loose. All the foods examined could be traced back to a certified organic source.
Warwickshire County Councillor Richard Hobbs, Portfolio Holder for Community Protection said:
“I am delighted that that this work has been carried out as it reinforces consumer’s confidence in the food they buy.”
A small number of issues relating to the selling of loose organic food products were identified. These were deemed to be minor issues easily solved by advising the retailer.
As always if consumers have complaints about any aspect of food, they are asked to contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 who will re-direct any complaints indicating breaches of legislation to their local trading Standards officers. |
