Bonfires
Bonfires form the central piece of most firework parties, follow our guide to make your bonfire, a safe bonfire.
Where should I build my bonfire?
- Bonfires should be sited at least 15 metres away from buildings, roads, hedges and fences and 50 metres away from the highway.
- Consider the direction in which the wind is blowing, you do not want your spectators to be engulfed in smoke.
- Build bonfires well away from any flammable products such as petrol and also away from power lines.
- Don't site it too near your display or firework storage area.
What should I do before I light the bonfire?
- Try and build your bonfire the day of the event, this should prevent unsuitable materials being added to it.
- Check the bonfire before lighting it to make sure the structure is stable and that there is nothing flammable near by.
- Ensure all children are supervised and animals are indoors.
- Let off your fireworks before lighting the bonfire.
- Have a fire blanket or bucket of water nearby in case of an emergency.
How should I light my bonfire?
- Appoint one person to look after the bonfire, this person should be responsible for lighting it.
- Ensure the person wears suitable clothing and has not been drinking alcohol.
- The person responsible for the bonfire should know what to do if someone's clothes catch fire or if someone is burnt.
- Never light a bonfire by using petrol or paraffin.
- Ensure that bonfires are not left unattended and are properly extinguished after use.
