Description
Fragment of a letter probably written to Alice Helps by George Eliot. She notifies her correspondent that 'we [George Eliot and John Walter Cross] expect to be at 4 Cheyne Walk Chelsea in the beginning of November'. There is mention of J W Cross wishing to take George Eliot away due to ill health. She wishes comfort and strength to her friend and ends with '...and what tender persons think precious balms to pour over us are often likely enough to break our heads'. Signed M A Cross.

Transcript
[Probably written between 01/10/1880 and 22/12/1880. This by deduction: Marian married Cross 6 May and died 22 Dec 1880 – Cheyne Walk was his home.]

Side A
We expect to be at 4 Cheyne Walk Chelsea in the beginning of November. Our movements this next month are rather more uncertain than usual, because Mr Cross wants to take me away for a little change of air, that I may recover the appetite & energy I brought home with me.

Side B
… from me. I desire all comfort & strength for you, but the heart knoweth its own bitterness, and what tender persons think precious balms to pour over us are often likely enough to break our heads.

Always, dear,
Your affectionate Friend

M. A. Cross
