Lorry operators across Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Coventry are being urged to save fuel and reduce emissions by switching off their truck engines when parked up. This ‘anti-idling’ initiative formed part of the Warwickshire and Worcestershire County Councils’ and Coventry City Council’s 'Switch It Off' energy savings campaign.
In 2004 there were 8,800 Heavy Goods Vehicles licensed in Warwickshire (source: DfT Vehicle Licensing Statistics 2004). If each of these 8,800 HGVs were to reduce idling by just an hour per week that could equate to 2 litres of diesel saved per vehicle per week, totalling 17,600 litres and just over 47 tonnes of CO2 saved weekly. Expand that over a year and we're talking 915,2000 litres saved and over 2,400 tonnes of CO2.
Lorry operators can download a flyer, poster and stickers which are aimed at highlighting to drivers the benefits of switching off truck engines rather than leaving them idling. The campaign has been supported by the Department for Transport’s Freight Best Practice programme which promotes all aspects of efficiency in the freight industry. Results from the 2006 national pilot are available in the Switch It Off Campaign Report.
