Safety and Security Tips

Although the chance of becoming a victim of crime in Warwickshire is low, the Community Safety Team have pulled together some simple tips which won’t cost you lots of money, but could save you a lot of hassle:

Home Security
  • Lock doors and windows even if you’re only going out for a few minutes
  • Fit deadlocks to all outside doors and don’t put the key in an obvious place (but make sure your household knows where they are in case of fire)
  • Install key-operated locks on your windows
  • If you’ve got a burglar alarm, arm it every time you are out
  • Leave lights and the radio on a timer for the evening, so it looks like you’re in when you’re not
  • Make sure your valuables can’t be seen from the window
  • Mark your property with your postcode and house number using a special security marker

Personal Security
  • Carry your zipped bag close to you and don’t have wallets or purses on show
  • Separate your possessions – for example, have your mobile phone in a separate pocket to your purse or wallet
  • Cover up expensive jewellery and be discreet with other valuables like MP3 players or mobile phones
  • Have your house keys ready so you can get in the door quickly – carry them on you and not in your bag
  • Be aware of your surroundings

Vehicle Security
  • Always keep your vehicle locked even if you’re only away from it for a few moments
  • Don’t leave anything on show in your vehicle
  • Park in well-lit areas, or with CCTV, or in Police-approved car parks (ParkMark on signs) where possible
  • Don’t leave your keys in the ignition, even if you’re de-icing the car
  • If you’re driving, keep windows and doors locked where possible so thieves can’t lean in during slow traffic or at traffic lights
