The Warwickshire Local Studies Toolkit

The Warwickshire Local Studies Toolkit was developed as part of the Extracting Warwickshire’s Past project to provide users with guidance about how to undertake research into the history and heritage of their local area. It is specifically aimed at those who have little, or no, experience of undertaking personal research and who feel they need some support and advice.

The toolkit was created with the support of a number of experts from the County, including Historic Environment Record staff, Local Studies Librarians, and County Record Office archivists. Within the toolkit there is information on key primary and secondary sources including a description of each, their main uses and where each is likely to be found. The toolkit also includes information sheets on the use of maps and care for historic documents and objects, as well as information on who to contact for further help and advice.

The Local Studies Toolkit can be viewed at your local library or via our online HER website Timetrail.

The Archaeological Comics

Roman Bidford Landscape

To date, two archaeological comics have been produced aimed at 7-11 year olds. The first was about the Romans in South Warwickshire and funded by the English Heritage Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund. The contents of this comic were informed by archaeological excavations carried out at Marsh Farm Quarry and the discovery of a Roman settlement and villa complex. In addition, artefacts held in local museums and aerial photographs from the HER collection were illustrated by the cartoonist.

The second comic was based on Warwickshire’s involvement in the Gunpowder Plot and published with support from MLA West Midlands. This comic told the story about the plot conspirators and the role of the Red Lion Inn in Dunchurch. Unlike the previous comic, the content and look were decided by pupils from Dunchurch Primary School. The pupils designed the front cover, commented on all drafts and created an accompanying museum exhibition.

Past, Present, Future: What, Where, When (A Key Stage three school pack)

The HER is always keen to encourage schools to use resources held in the HER. Currently there is a school pack available online for teachers to download. This pack uses archaeological and ecological records to help students facilitate a debate about whether a quarry company should be allowed to extend gravel extraction in an area close to the students' school. It is up to the students to discuss this issue and decide whether the extension should be permitted.

The school pack links to the National Curriculum: Key Stage 3 Unit 21 Citizenshop: People and the Environment and can be downloaded from our online HER website Timetrail
