| Toucan Crossings - Pedestrian and Cycle Crossings |
| |
A Toucan crossing is provided for cyclists and pedestrians and is associated with a cycleway. A green cycle indicator is provided alongside the green man, which can be mounted either on the far side of the crossing like a Pelican, or on the nearside like a Puffin.
A Toucan crossing is provided in conjunction with cycleways. It is usually 4 metres wide, rather than the standard 2.8 metres for a Pelican or Puffin crossing.
When the green man / green cycle is illuminated, it is safe to start to cross the road. There may also be a bleeping sound to assist the visually impaired. Some push button units are also fitted with a tactile knob under the unit which rotates when the green man / green cycle is illuminated.

| At a dual crossing, where pedestrians/cyclists are walking/cycling with traffic, Department for Transport design standards state that audible sound should not be provided as the visually impaired may be unable to determine which side of the crossing is bleeping and safe to cross. At this type of crossing the push button units are fitted with a tactile knob under the unit which rotates when the green man is illuminated. |
The Toucan crossing also has detectors which will extend the time available for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road and a further set of detectors will cancel the demand for the crossing if the pedestrian or cyclist moves away from the crossing area.
Zig-zag markings are laid on both the approaches and the exits to the crossing. The zig-zags ban waiting or parking, and prohibit vehicles from overtaking the leading moving motor vehicle on the approach to the crossing or the leading vehicle that has stopped at the crossing to allow pedestrians to cross. They also warn pedestrians of the increased risk of crossing in the zig-zag area. |
