Towns of Warwickshire - Warwick

Warwick is the county town, and is steeped in history. Well-known for its magnificent Castle, it also has many other historic buildings, secret gardens, antique shops and numerous attractions that make the town a magical place for a short break.

Warwick has a good reputation for the variety of its cafes, restaurants and other eateries in which to enjoy a good meal and glass of wine.

The busy Market Square plays host to numerous events throughout the year and is the home of the Charter Market and monthly Farmer's Market.

Places of interest

No visit to Warwick would be complete without stepping into Warwick Castle, Britain’s Greatest Mediaeval Experience. Visit the lavishly decorated State Rooms, scale the towers and ramparts and descend into the dark dungeon. Be chilled in the ghost tower, meet colourful characters and enjoy year round entertainment from Easter and Christmas festivities to jousting tournaments and birds of prey displays. With a Victorian Rose Garden, Mill, Engine House and 60 acres of grounds to explore, there is plenty to enjoy.

In the centre of the town sits the Market Hall Museum and dotted among the nearby streets many antique shops and excellent restaurants can be found.

Going away from the town centre towards Leamington Spa is the historic Smith Street, the oldest shopping street in Warwick. This street has many independant shops and several restaurants serving excellent food, while St John's Museum can be found at the end.

Warwick Racecourse on the opposite side of town enjoys a full racing calendar throughout the year and offers a fantastic day out at the races.

A place to get away from it all is St Nicholas Park to the south of the town centre. Here you can hire a boat from Warwick Boats and row down the River Avon to the battlements of Warwick Castle (as far as the weir). The Mill Gardens are also well worth a visit to just sit back and gaze at the River and the Castle. The Hill Close Gardens over the otherside of town are a delightful group of Victorian gardens that have been lovingly restored.

Attractions nearby to the town include Hatton Country World, which includes a shopping village, a farm and many other activities to keep families entertained.
