Dearest Pater
I arrived a week ago in Durban regular done up. I travelled in my wagon with a transport load from Newcastle to P. M. Burg. I was ill the whole time and very glad to get to P. M. Burg. I sent the wagon back and came in the Bus from P.M.B. to here- I had the doctor next day and he has been attending every since. All my glands are swollen and before I left home I got the Mumps. They caused me a great deal of pain. I have not got rid of the swellings yet. The Doctor recommends good living and has given me some medecine. I am at an Hotel, I have a very comfortable room. Just fancy I have got Natal sores I did not think I should get them it is only newcomers that get them. Eliza was confined on the 16th of a fine son so her -----(?) writes me. I have a very bad cold I had it now two months. I hope I shall soon get rid of it. Thanks we have received the Box of Books we have reading now for years. I have not drawn any money on you as I have so far had sufficient, but I shall be very glad of some to pay the doctor and Hotel.
Please excuse such bad writing it is so hot.
Did you get my last letter with a penny stamp on it, That was the Postmasters doing.
Love to little Mutter & self From your Affectionate son.
H.A. Lewes
I will try and write more next time.
