Know what to do when it floods

The Environment Agency has produced three leaflets for the public to help them prepare for, respond to and recover from flooding. The leaflets provide simple, easy to follow advice about how you can protect your home and family, precautions to take during an actual flood and information to help you recover from a flood emergency. Crucial Crew Week

During July 2008, the Emergency Planning Unit have been involved with the ‘Crucial Crew’ programme. This annual event involves key stage 2 children,10-11yrs, learning about a range of safety issues including fire and road safety and this year emergency planning. Click here for more information.

Latest update on Avian Flu


An outbreak of Avian Influenza has been confirmed on a premise near Shennington (Oxfordshire).The disease is the Highly Pathogenic H7 strain, not H5N1.
The flock affected are approximately 24,000 free range layers. 3km and 10km zones have been established around the premise and both zones extend in to Warwickshire. Please click here for more information. To download a map of the Temporary Control Zone, please click here.

Flooding: A Guide for Older People

The Environment Agency in partnership with Help the Aged have produced a flood initiative for the elderly, whom studies suggest are particularly vulnerable to and affected by flooding. The guide 'Flooding: be prepared, a guide for older people', it is hoped will raise awareness and assist elderly communities in preparing for and responding to flooding. [More]

Kingsbury Oil Complex

Residents in Kingsbury have been issued with safety information giving them advice on what they should do in the event of an emergency at Kingsbury Oil Complex.

Kingsbury Oil Complex stores and distributes a variety of petroleum and oil products and has been operating since 1969. The complex has an excellent safety record. All companies based at the site have rigorous safety systems and procedures designed to prevent any accidents.

Warwickshire County Council Emergency Planning Unit has produced an ‘offsite’ emergency plan, in conjunction with the emergency services, the site operators and other key partners in the unlikey event of an emergency at the site. The distribution of an advice leaflet to local communities in the vicinity of the site is the latest development in this planning process. Is Your Company Prepared?

Disasters can strike at any time and each year one in five organisations suffer a major disruption from incidents such a fires, floods, power failure, product recall or even terrorism. Of those affected 80 percent never re-open or close down within 18 months. This can however be dramatically reduced through having effective business continuity plans in place. To assist companies in this the Emergency Planning Unit in partnership with other local authorities in the area have launched a series of pages on its website which explain what business continuity is all about, why it's important and also offer a range of resources to get businesses started. Warwickshire Community Risk Register

The Civil Contingencies Act came into force on the 14th November 2005, and with its arrival came the requirement for the first time to publish a community risk register. The Warwickshire Community Risk Register gives a brief summary of the risks facing the Warwickshire region and is hoped will help steer further work in Emergency Planning but above all help to keep the population of Warwickshire well informed [More].

Emergency Advice for Schools

Schools in Warwickshire have been given advice and guidance on how to deal with a range of emergencies, ensuring they have access to the latest advice, good practice and legislative requirements for planning and dealing with emergencies. A comprehensive pack is available to all schools providing a template to develop their own plans, and contains a checklist to ensure that nothing is left out. [More]


Avian Influenza

Avian influenza has dominated the headlines recently due to the spread of the H5N1 virus between both wild and domestic birds across South East Asia, Russia and parts of Europe. There is global concern that the current strain of the disease could mutate into a form that could become highly contagious and lead to a human pandemic, however the risk of this is currently low. Civil Contingencies Act - Implementation in Warwickshire

The Civil Contingencies Act, described by the UK government as “an important element of the government's work to enhance and update the resilience of the United Kingdom to disruptive challenges of the 21st Century” came into force in April 2005, and following a comprehensive consultation, revised guidance has now been published.
