Education For Sustainable Development
What is Eco-Schools?
Eco-Schools
Eco-Schools is a programme which increases environmental protection in both primary and secondary schools. It is run at local level, but is also a national programme. There are nine environmental project areas. i.e water, waste, energy, litter, healthy living, school grounds, biodiversity, transport, and global perspective. Schools carry out environmental projects and gain prestigious awards i.e. Bronze, Silver and Green Flag. The programme is student lead, with governor and teacher involvement. Work can also be integrated into the curriculum. Most schools are already carrying out work such as ‘Healthy Schools’, Recycling, Composting and School Travel Plans which will help them gain an award .
