Tithe Apportionments Database
Tithe Apportionments

History

Tithe apportionments were produced after the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836, which ‘commuted’ all tithe payments to a monetary rent charge. The schedules cover titheable land, by parish, in which the occupier had a duty to pay a proportion of the yearly income generated by the land (whether money or produce) to the landowner.

Before the reformation, payments were usually made to the parish church, subsequently, however, the sale of church land meant that it ceased to be a purely ecclesiastical payment. By the 19th century, the calculation of tithe payments had become controversial and the enclosure of farm land, under which tithes were replaced by rent charges, meant that the payment was becoming irrelevant.

In 1836, tithe apportionment schedules of all titheable land were produced, listing owners, occupiers, their land, its size and the new rent charge it attracted. The schedules were often accompanied by a map, which shows individual plots of land with a plot number. These maps are not included on our website, but can be viewed at Warwickshire County Record Office.

The schedules are not arranged alphabetically by owner, occupier or by plot number so it often requires much time-consuming research to discover the details of a particular plot or person. However, you can search this database by name, parish and property name, as well as viewing entries in plot number order, within the parish, or alphabetical order by the name of the owners or occupiers.

The tithe maps and apportionments at the record office are split into two collections, between the modern dioceses of Birmingham and Coventry, and this is reflected in the two series of reference numbers for the collections: CR 328 and CR 569. At the time of the 1836 Act, the parishes of Warwickshire were still divided between the dioceses of Lichfield and Worcester; the Birmingham and Coventry dioceses were formed in 1905 and 1918 respectively. The tithe maps and apportionments are arranged according to the modern dioceses, as the Diocesan Registrars of Birmingham and Coventry, acting upon an order of the Master of the Rolls in 1955, deposited them here.
