Road Safety
Protecting Warwickshire's road users from harm

The size of Warwickshire’s problem

"The health of the people of Warwickshire is generally better than the average for England. However the rate of road injuries and deaths is higher than the England average” (NHS Health Profile 2008 Warwickshire).

Riding on rural roads
So what does the Road Safety Unit do
  • We analyse how crashes have occurred to help prevent them in future.
  • We use education, engineering and enforcement.
  • We work in partnership with others; especially the Police.
You can help too!
  • Slow down - keep to the limit.
  • Don't drink and drive.
  • Wear a seat belt.
  • Look out for motorbikes - especially at junctions.
  • Switch off your mobile when you drive.
  • Set a good example for your children.
Road deaths and injuries cause terrible pain and distress. In 1997 there were 769 people killed or seriously injured on Warwickshire's roads. By 2008 this had reduced to 348. The Government estimates that every road death we prevent saves £1.6 million and every serious injury over £185,000.

We are making progress. But the lifetime risk of dying in a road crash is still about 1 in 200.
So we must do better!

Warwickshire’s performance in tackling the problem

“Road safety is improving at a significantly faster rate than other councils and is exceeding targets. There are examples of good work with communities to develop community cohesion. The Council is working well with its partners to significantly improve road safety. The rate of reduction for the number of people killed or seriously injured on roads is above average and in excess of LPSA targets.

Action taken to inform young people and their carers about key risks to their safety is good. The number of children killed or seriously injured in road accidents has reduced significantly; the 69 per cent reduction since 2002 is better than the national average. Programmes to promote road safety for younger children have been particularly effective for example `KerbSafe' which involves professionals as well as parents to deliver consistent road safety messages to children.”

In May 2009 the Department for Transport published a consultation on making Britain's roads the safest in the world. A Safer Way can be viewed on its web site.

The closing date for comments was 14 July 2009.
