Global Beats Conference
Warwick Arts Centre, University of Warwick
The County Music Service organised its first
Globalbeats
conference in Warwickshire aimed at promoting musical cultures from around the world. The day introduced a variety of world instruments through practical activities led by some of the nationally recognised leaders in their field.
Fantastic, amazing and inspirational are just some of the words used by 70 delegates to describe their experience of the Conference in November. Each delegate had the chance to attend three exhirarating workshops and the multicultural theme was maintained throughout with an exotic lunch menu and trade stands featuring world instruments.

County Music Service has invested significantly in resources for the county which includes class sets of African Djembe in all sizes for KS1, KS2 and KS3, Steel Pan, Samba sets and Japanese Taiko. Those schools who attended will receive a certificate of attendance which allows them to borrow the sets of instruments for short periods of time free of charge. Resources will also be available to aid the teaching of these sets of instruments.

Delegates took part in workshops, and learnt the historical and cultural aspects of the chosen discipline. They also had the opportunity to meet up with suppliers of World Music instruments and taste exotic foods from varying countries around the world, specifically linked with the musical disciplines of the day.
Delegates can now consider the possibility of accessing these instrumental/vocal combinations in school. Most importantly …. they all had fun!
