Student Finance Direct
Student Funding - An Overview

Student Finance Direct - Warwickshire

Here, in Warwick we process the loans based system of student support that is outlined on this page. We administer the awards held by students from all parts of Warwickshire.

    Variable Tuition Fees and Tuition Fee Loan

    From September 2006, Universities and colleges offering HE courses in England will be allowed to vary the amount of fees they charge students.

    You will not be required to pay fees before you start your course or while you are studying, although you can do so if you wish. You can apply for an additional loan to cover these fees. This will give you the advantage of not having to find this money from elsewhere. If you decide to take out the tuition fee loan, the fees will be paid directly to the institution, and you repay the loan in the same way as you would repay the maintenance loan (the April after you graduate and once you earn £15,000)

    The maximum amount of tuition that can be charged is:

    2008/2009 academic year - up to £3,145

    Maintenance Grant

    From 2006, new full time students from lower income households will be eligible to receive a (non repayable) maintenance grant

    The amount of grant available is dependent on household income

    For the 2008/2009 academic year for students who started their course in 2008/2009 (and do not have previous study):

    The maximum maintenance grant available is £2,835
    • Household Income of less than £25,000; student will receive full grant
    • Household Income of between £25,001 and £60,005; student will receive part of the grant
    • Household Income of more than £60,005; student will not receive any grant

      For the 2008/2009 academic year for students who started their course in 2006/2007 or 2007/2008:

      The maximum maintenance grant available is £2,835
      • Household Income of less than £18,360; student will receive full grant
      • Household Income of between £18,360 and £39,305; student will receive part of the grant
      • Household Income of more than £39,306; student will not receive any grant

        Maintenance Loan

        The maximum loans available are:

        For the 2008/2009 academic year
        • living away from the parental home and studying in London: £6,475;
        • living away from the parental home and studying elsewhere: £4,625;
        • living at their parents' home: £3,580.

        If a student receives any of the maintenance grant up to a maximum of £1,260, that amount is deducted from the amount of maintenance loan available.
        For students who started their course in 2008/2009 with a household income of more that £60,005, no maintenance grant is payable and 25% of the above loan is dependent on income.

        For students who started their course in either 2006/2007 or 2007/2008 with a household income of more that £39,306, no maintenance grant is payable and 25% of the above loan is dependent on income.

        Extra Help for certain students

        Some students get additional help. This help does not have to be repaid. You might be able to get this help if:
        • you have a disability or specific learning difficulty (dyslexia). Please see our page outlining the Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs);
        • you have one or more dependants;
        • you have childcare costs to meet;
        • you are under 21 and have been in care since you were 16.
        The system of student support is complex. For a fuller account of how the system works, please visit the DfES Web-Site.
