Restricted waste – paint

Please note that not all waste types are accepted at all recycling centres so please use our what you can take and where (map) to check which recycling centre you can take your items to.

Paint

Small amounts of household paint are accepted from members of the public (commercial paint not accepted) free of charge at a limited number of recycling centres. The maximum quantity accepted is 25 litres per household per month – for example this could be 2 full x 10 litre containers plus one full 5 litre container or 5 half full 10 litre containers etc – just as long as the overall volume does not exceed 25 litres in total.

All visits must be pre-booked and are limited to one visit per household per month.

If your unwanted paint is good enough for someone else to use, or for general advice and information on paint please visit our A to Z page.

Householders have a duty of care and responsibility for the hazardous chemical and paint waste they produce. Please understand that Warwickshire County Council reserves the right to restrict, or refuse certain hazardous chemical and paint wastes on the grounds of environmental compliance, the health and safety of visitors and staff at our sites and that hazardous chemical and paint wastes may not be legally classed as household waste.

Quantity accepted

  • Maximum volume of paint accepted per visit is 25 litres
  • Maximum size of container accepted is 10 litres.

General advice and information:

  • Leave the paint in its original container (as long as it does not leak)
  • If not in the original container, use a clearly marked suitable storage method
  • Store in a cool, dry place out of reach of children
  • Never pour paint down the drain, as it can pollute local water courses
  • Do not put liquid paint into your rubbish bin (dried out water based paint is fine). Collection vehicles compact waste and there is a risk that the liquid will leak out of the vehicle and on to the road
  • Paint from businesses are not accepted
  • We are not able to collect your paint
  • We will only accept paint in containers which do not leak.
